The history of medicine in Iran can be traced back to many centuries ago. The first medical school in Iran, known as "Gondishapur" or "Jondishapir" was established in the third century A.D., during the Sassanids period. It was located near the present Ahwaz city in Khuzestan Province. The "Golden Age of Medicine" in Iran was between the ninth to 14Th centuries. In that period, two renowned physicians: Razi (Rhazes 865-925 A.D.) and Ibn Sina (Avicenna 980-1037 A.D.) were flourished. Their impact on medicine, continued up to 17th century. The introduction of modern medical sciences in Iran started with the establishment of the first higher education institute, known as the Dar al- Fonun (the House of Techniques) in Tehran in 1851. Then, in 1934, the Medical Faculty at Tehran University was founded.
